Friday Faves: The perfect Mother’s Day gift

Good morning Loves and Happy Friday.  As you read this I am in New York City for SELF Workout in the Park. It’s an all day fitness event hosted by SELF Magazine and Crunch Gym. So expect lot’s of giveaways next week when I get back.

This weekend is Mother’s Day and if you are looking for the perfect (last minute) Mother’s Day gift then have no fear – I am here to help. My mother is your typical pastel wearing, muffin baking lady who subscribes to Cottage Life Magazine and Martha Stewart Living.  It’s not hard to find a Mother’s Day gift that my she will love – basically if it’s a bright colour and really girly then my mother will love it. Sometimes it’s difficult to find a unique gift for my mother because I find that a lot of Mother’s Day gifts are so cliche; but she doesn’t care. My mother always says that she will love whatever gift we give her for Mother’s Day.

These are four gifts that I know my mother will love. Can you guess which one I got her for Mother’s Day this year? Mom, if you haven’t received it in the mail yet, it should be delivered very soon.

- A bouquet of flowers.  Mother’s Day is in spring so a nice bouquet of flowers can be the perfect Mother’s Day gift.

- Candles. Bath & Body Works has some fresh new flavours such as Gelato and Island Margarita. Fresh spring colours and smell good scents are perfect for any room in your mom’s house.

- Subscription box membership. I am currently subscribing to Kona Kase and Beauty Box 5, one is full of healthy snacks and the other is full of makeup and cosmetics.

- Colourful pyjamas. I don’t know what it is about spring that makes me want to buy everything colourful but I do. Get your mom some fun pjs this Mother’s Day.  If your mom is having hot flashes I suggest getting cute little sleepy shorts and a tank top.

My Wish List and Holiday Shopping Tips

The holiday season is in full swing and that means that shoppers are browsing various websites and shopping malls in order to find the perfect gift for everyone on their holiday list. I personally love shopping, but even I need to plan a holiday shopping strategy. I like to plan my holiday shopping in order to make sure that I don’t go crazy and also to make sure that I remember to buy gifts for all of my loved ones.

I used to love browsing through shopping malls during the holidays while I enjoyed looking at the festive decorations and listening to the cheerful music; but in recent years as I have grown more impatient in crowds I have discovered the world of online shopping.

I enjoy online shopping because it is fast, it’s easy and I can do it from the comfort of my own home – I can even do it in the comfort of my own pyjamas, if I wish to do so. I also enjoy online shopping because it’s one stop shopping for all of my gifting needs.  When I shop with one website I can get gifts for everyone on my list, only pay one shipping cost (or have the fee waived with a minimum purchase amount) and I can have all of the gifts delivered right to my doorstep. Easy. Breezy!

Shopping online with a cash back or discount website is the gift that keeps on giving. Happy Birthday to Me!

My Birthday Haircut

Many people make positive changes in their life on January 1 to celebrate the New Year, but I personally like to start making positive changes on my birthday.  New Year’s Day is a new beginning for many people but I like to measure my personal growth and happiness each year on my birthday. On October 9 I turn 32 years old and honestly I am a little bit excited about it.

My last two birthdays have been really crappy but this year I am excited to celebrate my birthday because I am finally in a semi-happy-place. Two years ago on my 30th birthday the psycho step witch (aka my dad’s alcoholic girlfriend) violently attacked me.  I was so upset by her violent behaviour and by my dad’s decision to stay with her that I basically slept through the rest of the year; I spent 2010 in a perpetual state of emotional instability.  Once I finally woke up from my self-loathing I continued to replay the events of the step witches violent behaviour over and over again in my head. Why did she attack me? What could I have done differently? Can I live a life without my family? I spent all of 2011 in a state of uncontrollable anger.

In 2012 I decided that I can’t change what happened that night, I can’t make the step witch sober up and become a better person, and I can’t change the fact that my dad chose to stay with a woman who physically hits him. So I decided to start making positive changes in my life, I made a list of all the things that make me unhappy and I started making positive changes towards loving life and learning to love myself.

This year I went to two blogging conferences (and blogged way too much about them), I started exercising on a regular basis, I began trying new experiences to get out of my comfort zone (which I usually never leave), I decided to go back to school in a journalism program, and I made blogging daily on My Diary Entry my ultimate priority. I am currently working on my first book “A Better You” and I hope to have it finished, or be close to finished, by December 31.

Is Online Shopping too good to be true? No, it’s for real!

Good Morning everyone, today I am writing on My Diary Entry with excellent news. On my recent trip to BlogHer in New York City I discovered a website called Ebates Canada.  It is a one-stop online shopping website that offers both instant discount codes and cash back on all of your purchases. I am a huge fan of online shopping because I hate waiting in lines and I hate dealing with salespeople.

I love boots because they are very comfortable and they are diverse; I can wear boots with jeans, leggings, and skirts.  I purchased a pair of black boots that were originally priced at $58.00 for only $37.99.  On top of the sale price I also received 5% cash back and a 20% instant discount on my entire purchase.  Including the shipping and handling to Canada my total order was only $55.58.  In my opinion that’s a great deal.

Oh and did I mention that everyone receives a $10 gift card to the retailer of their choice with their first purchase?

New York City is Not the Same, but I Still Love It.

My recent trip to NYC was definitely an eye opener on just how sever the global economic crisis has affected New York City.  My trip to NYC was primarily a business trip because I had to open a US Bank Account in order to receive payments from my new Freelance Employers .  I absolutely didn’t mind having to book a last minute trip to New York right before the holidays because I always have time in my life for New York City.

I have never been to New York City before Christmas.  I have been to the city for New Years Eve, but never during the madness that leads up to the holidays.  The city was packed with people and the streets were very busy all the way from Canal to Broadway.  There were line ups everywhere and every single store was packed with holiday shoppers who were trying to get the best deals for everyone on their Christmas List.  And let me tell you, boy did we get some great deals.

Although retailers on the non mainstream streets like Canal in Chinatown have significantly increased their prices for accessories, the major retailers have dropped their prices in order to be affordable for everyone.  I bought $48 sweaters at American Eagle and Aeropostal for only $12!  I am not sure if the major discounts were because of the holiday season or if they are because a discounted $12 is better than $0 for retail stores who are struggling through these tough economic times.

It wasn’t the massive crowds that were the biggest surprise for me during this trip to New York; it was definitely how much the vibe of NYC has changed over the past 3 years. New York will always have a special place in my heart and I still hope to live their some day.  However, the crisis that the American people have suffered through over the past few years has definitely taken its toll on the vibrant life of the city that never sleeps.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn near Wall Street in the Financial District of Downtown Manhattan, which we purchased at a discount rate through Priceline.  This was the perfect location for our stay because it was close to the subway, it was close to restaurants, and it was also close to the major discount store Century 21.  I absolutely love shopping for accessories at Century 21.

Staying in Manhattans Financial District also means that we were close the construction site of the new World Trade Center. There are 3 new towers being built on the World Trade Center construction site, and there is also a new memorial museum which is currently open for business.  The rebuilding of the World Trade Center in New York City shows exactly how the American people can come together and stand strong during the time of a crisis.  Let’s hope that the American people will come together next November when they visit the polls to re-elect the President of the United States of America.

Jean Paul Gaultier in Montreal

I recently went to the Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit at the Fine Arts Museum in Montreal.  I like to look good, but I am not a huge fan of fashion.  I like to watch the red carpet before awards shows, and I like to look at outfits in women’s magazines such as Glamour and Cosmopolitan.  However this is because at 30 years old I am still trying to find my own sense of personal style, it’s not because I am a fashion addict.  I am learning how to wear individual pieces together and make them into an outfit.

The Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit was very well presented.  Each room represented a different collection and a different period in Gaultier’s career.  Each outfit was displayed with specific details including the number of hours involved in creating the clothing, as well as the year and collection in which it was displayed on the runway.  Some outfits were from recent Jean Paul Gaultier collections and some were from collections as old as the 1970’s.

It was my first time inside the Fine Arts Museum and I have to admit that I was overwhelmed at its beauty and architecture.  There is something so refined about the cleanliness and structure of a museum.  The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier is on display at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts until October 2, 2011. The cost is $15 to view the exhibit, but it is only $7.50 on Wednesday nights after 5 pm.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier was inspiring because visitors can see the process of his creations from the sketches to the final runway look.  Seeing the creative process from the beginning to the end made me see that dreams really can come true with hard work.  It made me want to work hard to finish my book and search for a publishing agent.  The mannequins at the Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit have digital faces that tell a story about Jean Paul Gaultier and his collections.  Visitors are allowed to take photos of the mannequins, but not anything else.  This is a real shame because there is some lovely artwork displayed throughout Exhibit.
